Apple released its App Store Best of 2012 selections Thursday — and there are a few surprises.
Each year, Apple release a list of its best apps for iPhone and iPad in a variety of categories. Last year, Instagram received iPhone app of the year, while Snapseed got the best iPad app.
A year later, Instagram is part of Facebook and Snapseed has been snapped up by Google.
This year Apple chose Action Movie FX [iTunes link] as its iPhone App of the Year, while Paper [iTunes link] is the iPad App of the Year.

The company also revealed the most popular paid and free apps for 2012. On the iPhone, the new YouTube was the most popular free app for iPhone — outpacing Instagram, Draw Something and even Facebook. Meanwhile, Angry Birds Space was the most popular paid app for iPhone.
